一、由“China”派生出“Chinese”违背了英语的构词规则
讨论“Chinese”的歧视性语义,首先要介绍一下“China”作为“中国”的英语名称的来源.关于“China”的词源,大约有三类说法：其一是来源于印度梵语“Cina”,“Cina”的梵文含义是“秦国”,是古代印度人对秦汉时期的中国的称呼[1].其二是源于印度梵语“Cina”的“思维”或
“文物国”之意[2].其三是来源于中国特产物品“丝”（梵文Cina）或瓷器（china）的英语名称.关于“China”一词是否含有歧视性语义的问题,学术界有一些争议,本文对此不予以讨论.但是由其所派生出来的“Chinese”却明显地包含歧视性语义.
（一）在英语中表示“……国家、地区的人”的基本方式
在英语中,表示“……国家、地区的人”基本上有三种构词方式[3]：
1、以元音结尾的词,直接在其后加“-n”、“-an”或“-ian”.这种词形变化在英语中所占的比例最大,如
“America+n→American”.
2、以辅音结尾的词,直接在其后加“-i”,如“Pakistan+i→Pakistani”.
3、在词尾直接加“-ese”,或将词尾变形后加“-ese”,如“Japan+ese→Japanese”.
（二）由“China”派生出“Chinese”违背了英语构词规则
“China”是以元音a结尾的单词,按照上面的构词规则,由它派生出表示“中国人、中国的”词时,本应该在其词尾直接加“-n”或“-ian”,可是在现有英语中表示“中国人、中国的”的单词“Chinese”却是将“China”作出变形后再添加“-ese”而来的,明显违反了英语的词形变化规则.那么,为什么会产生这种违反规则的词形变化呢?实际上是要表达一种歧视,“Chinese”实际上是一个种族蔑称.
（三）“Chinese”在构词方法上包含歧视性语义
“-ese”后缀在英语中有“微小的”、“小的”、“不重要的”,甚至“低等的”、“劣等的”、“微不足道的”、“弱小的”、“怪异的”、“带有疾病的”
种族的涵义.将以“-ese”结尾的单词作为代表一个国家的人民和语言的名词,无疑为这个国家打上了严重的文化歧视烙印.因此,违反英语的构词规则,将
“China”变形后再添加“-ese”构成“Chinese”,用其表示“中国人”,导致了歧视性语义的产生.“Chinese”的这种歧视性语义,在非英语语境中接收英语教育的人,是很难意识和体会到其歧视性涵义的.而在英语语境中生活一段时间之后,就会逐渐意识到和体会到其深刻的歧视性涵义.称呼中国人为“Chinese”,与称呼一个黑种人为“Nigger”（黑鬼）一样,其中包含着深刻的种族蔑视和侮辱.与之相反,英语中对该文化所认为“优等”
的种族和人的称呼,其后缀则多为“-an”.
