The Old Man and the Sea 英文简介
The Old Man and the Sea, is a story of friendship between a young boy and an aging fisherman tormented by hunger and weeks of ill luck. Santiago, a once strong, proud man is coming to terms with his failing abilities and age.
After many weeks of returning home to his small village, day after day with nothing in his boat, Santiago is forced to accept the other villager"s small charities. He resolves to sail far out to sea in search of a catch that will redeem his self-confidence. Early the next morning, he descends to his fishing skiff, and rows out, into the dark sea, saying good-bye to his friend, the small boy, and the safety of the beach, perhaps for the last time.
Later that day his luck turns and he hooks the giant marlin. The battle begins, not just with the fish, but with himself as well; the battle for his life, his regained youth and the return of his peer"s respect. For two days and two nights his adversary pulls him further out to sea. Memories of his youth fill his vision, memories of battles fought and of scars healed. For hours at a time the physical game, he convinces himself, is only winnable if he can triumph mentally.
Unable to loosen or even adjust his grip, for fear that his foe would sense his failing strength, Santiago is forced into a motionless prison, escape from which, is in the hands of his greatest adversary ever.
体会:
This story happened in 1940th near a Gulf Stream in Cuba. The main character Santiago is an old man, who fishes alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and lives a small village. He is characterized as someone struggling against defeat. The second character Manolin is a young boy whom Santiago teaches to fish. The litter boy is his loyal friend. Language is great simplicity and power. The theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss. It is a song of praise of heroism.

The Author, Ernest Miller Hemingway is a famous writer in the literary world. ‘’The old man and the sea’’ was written in 1952, and it is one of Hemingway’s most enduring works .It won the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature. The author wants to told readers ,you will be supposed to like this old person same mind lofty aspiration, and will even better pursue even better, the bigger goal, don’t easy give up your goal in your life.
In life, some losses are unavoidable, we should treat the optimistic attitude , can"t worry about petty gain or loss . Finally, the novel sees with a teenager that old fisherman has 18 feet of big long Malin"s fish totally in the tolerance , the ones that have described this fish are enormous again, prove that old fisherman"s difficulty overcome is big, than ordinary. Old fisherman"s spirit that makes great efforts to struggle fearless of danger and difficulty that the novel has been extolled, we should be like him too, can" t be satisfied with the current situation , should be positive upwards, it should be unremitting to do anything, it must not give up halfway to meeting difficulty should meet the difficulty. Only in this way, we could obtain greater success and victory .
The novel shows a view about struggle of life, even in the face of nature can’t be conquered, but still can be moral victory. Perhaps the result of a failure, but I n the struggle of process, the reader can see how a person become an indomitable spirit of man. I like the main character Santiago and the classic saying ‘’But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated’’, because this is Santiago’s faith of life, and the human will not fail also, the enterprise spirit of a carols. It is encouraging me to face up to life with smiles no matter what happens. It"s a simple story, but offers the reader much to think about without lapsing into the didactic. I am strongly recommend that book.
Hemingway concentrated on the most important points of building characters. The old man’s name is Santiago but he seldom uses it. He just calls him “the old man”. The boy’s name is even not given. He is likely to consider names are just symbols which cannot emphasise individual traits. The frame of each character is built on the basis of carefully chosen materials, epitomes of traits and extraordinary mastery of the skill of narration and description. It’s concise and successful though the work is sophisticated and demanding. We can learn and enjoy a lot from it.

The Old Man and the Sea is a heroic tale of man"s strength pitted against forces he cannot control. It is a story about an old Cuban fisherman and his three-day battle with a giant Marlin. Through the use of three prominent themes; friendship, bravery, and Christianity; the Old Man and the Sea strives to teach important life lessons to the reader while also epitomizing Santiago, the old fisherman, as a Hemingway code hero. The relationship between Santiago and the boy is introduced early in the story. They are unlikely companions; one is old and the other young, yet they share an insuperable amount of respect and loyalty for each other. Santiago does not treat Manolin as a young boy but rather as an equal. Age is not a factor in their relationship. Manolin does not even act as a young boy; he is mature and sensitive to Santiago"s feelings. He even offers to disobey his parents and accompany Santiago on his fishing trips. Santiago is viewed as an outcast in his village because he has not caught any fish for more than eighty-four days and is therefore unlucky. Nonetheless Manolin is loyal to Santiago and even when his parents forbid him he wants to help his friend. Their conversations are comfortable, like that of two friends who have known each other for a long time. When they speak it is usually about baseball or fishing, the two things they have most in common. Their favorite team is the Yankees and Santiago never loses faith in them even when the star player, Joe DiMaggio is injured with a heel spur. In this way Santiago not only teaches Manolin about fishing but also about important characteristics such as faith. In the story Santiago"s bravery is unsurpassed but it is not until he hooks the great fish that we truly see his valor and perseverance. Through Santiago"s actions Hemingway teaches the reader about bravery and tenacity in the face of adversity. He demonstrates that even when all is lost and seems hopeless a faith and willful heart will overcome anything. Santiago had lost his luckiness and therefore the respect of his village. Through the description of his cabin we also suspect that Santiago is a widower. Although Santiago has had many troubles he perseveres. He has faith in Manolin, in the Yankees, in Joe DiMaggio, and most importantly in himself. This is perhaps his greatest attribute because without it he would never have had the strength to persevere and defeat the giant Marlin. Faith is not the only thing that drives his perseverance. Santiago also draws upon his past victories for strength. After he hooks the Marlin he frequently recalls his battle with a native in what he calls the hand game. It is not just an arm wrestling victory for him it is a reminder of his youthful days. His recollections of this event usually proceed a favorite dream of his in which he sees many lions on a peaceful shore. These lions represent him when he is young and strong and could overcome any challenge. Although he is an old man and his body is no longer like it used to be his heart is still great and he eventually defeats the Marlin. Santiago"s perseverance and bravery are further illustrated when he tries to fight off the sharks. He was a fisherman all his life and therefore he knows that the fate of his catch is inevitable yet he persists to fight the sharks. The battle between him and the sharks is about principles not a mere fish. Santiago is still a great warrior at heart and warriors fight until the end. One of the greatest and most obvious pieces of symbolism in the story is Christianity. From the beginning of the story the reader is shown a unique relationship between Santiago and Manolin. Their relationship parallels that of Christ and his disciples. Manolin is Santiago"s disciple and Santiago teaches Manolin about fishing and life. One of the greatest lessons that Santiago gives is that of a simple faith. Have faith in the Yankees my son. This type of faith reflects the basic principles of Christianity. Hemingway"s description of Santiago further illustrates Christian symbolism. Hemingway gives a reference to the nail-pierced hands of Christ by stating that Santiago"s hands had deep creased scars. Hemingway also parallels Santiago"s suffering to that of Christ by stating that he settled 卆gainst the wood and took his suffering as it came. Even more profound is the description of Santiago"s response when he saw the sharks, just a noise such a man might make, involuntarily feeling the nail go through his hands and into the wood. (Page 107) Further symbolism is shown when Santiago arrives home and carries the mast across his shoulders as Christ carried the cross to Calvary. Also, like Christ, Santiago could not bare the weight and collapsed on the road. When he finally reached his cabin he slept face down on the newspapers with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up. (Page 122) Hemingway puts these themes together in such a way that they do not conflict with each other. He does allow Christianity to be a more dominant theme than the other but instead makes it more symbolic than intentional. He does not smother the relationship between the old man and the young boy but instead separates them for a large part of the story. Finally, he does not make Santiago"s bravery a central them by highlighting his weaknesses. In the end the old mans perseverance and faith pay off. He finally gains the respect of the village and succeeds in teaching Manolin the lessons of faith and bravery. In Ernest Hemingway"s The Old Man and the Sea, one will find many examples in which the main character, Santiago, surpasses many hardships while being courageous, brave, and being a friend. Each of these: courage, bravery, and friendship, are qualities in a Hemingway code hero.【老人与海英文】

Comments by Bob Corbett
January 2006
Once again I return to the work of Ernest Hemingway after an almost 50 year hiatus. The Old Man and the Sea is a magnificent story. At one level it is the tale of a man and a fish,at another,a story of man versus nature,at yet another, the story of the culture of manhood, courage, bravery in the face of existence, and at yet another a history of what life was like when individuals were more the central actors on the human stage and not groups or organizations.
At the most basic level the very elderly fisherman,Santiago, goes out in his small fishing boat after 84 days without hooking a decent fish.He goes far out,and hooks a gigantic 18 foot long sword fish. The battle then begins, and the fish drags the small boat and Santiago far out to sea.For two days they battle, and Santiago wins that battle, but then loses the great fish on the way home to the scavenger sharks who find him easy prey.
Hemingway celebrates the courage and raw guts of this old man, even recounting a time in Casablanca when he had spent an entire day in an arm wrestling match with a much larger man in a seaside tavern.Hemingway celebrates a concept of humans as beings who go it alone, fierce, brave, courageous without even thinking about it,oozing strength from the nature of the best of the species.
The story is told with incredible economy of words and description, yet nothing is sacrificed which drives home the power and inner strength of this man,who just takes it as what he does, what it is to be a serious fisherman.
Hemingway抯 world is not my world.I am no Santiago,no macho man.And the culture of today has little place left for the radical individual whom Hemingway celebrates and Santiago portrays.Yet the power of Hemingway抯 telling is such that I couldn抰 help but be on Santiago抯 side,to admire him,to ache with his loss in the end to forces greater than he.
There is a side tale as well. This great individual, the man who stands alone,is not alone completely by choice. He has developed a friendship,a working relationship,a love with a young boy who began fishing with him when the boy was only five. Now the boy has moved on to another boat,a more successful one,at his parents?behest, but he pines to work with Santiago, and when the battle with the great fish has been engaged,Santiago pleads over and over and over wish the boy were here.
Like many readers who might come upon this novel today,I live a life of citified ease and comfort.A life far removed from harsh confrontations with nature. But Hemingway forces me to remember and acknowledge the individual, the struggle for the most basic existence, the battle with nature for survival itself. But most importantly he makes one acknowledge the importance of the individual and the magnificence of courage, skill, art and endurance.
